The Needle — L’Aiguille
Selection · Admission · Identity · Sealing
The Needle marks the point at which a possible or existing realization may become a particular recognized under the Federation's constitutional terms.
An object may exist, a design may be complete, or a configuration may be technically possible without any of them having been admitted into the Federation.
Existence does not establish admission. Capability does not confer authority.
Four Distinct Acts
Selection identifies a specific configuration or existing object for consideration. Selection does not change its standing.
Admission determines whether the selected object or configuration satisfies the applicable constitutional conditions. The Sterile Kernel governs this determination. Admission permits the specified object or configuration to proceed; it does not authorize unrelated operations.
Constitution establishes the admitted realization as a particular with recognized identity and standing within the Federation. It does not create the underlying physical object or claim ownership of it.
Sealing fixes the particular's recognized identity and binding terms in a durable record. The seal makes that identity recoverable without treating subsequent representations as substitutes for the original.
These acts are related but not interchangeable.
Passage Through the Needle
The Needle marks the jurisdictional passage from selection to recognized particularity.
A selected configuration may originate within a manifold of admissible variation. An existing physical object may also be presented for admission. Neither route establishes constitutional standing by itself.
Following admission, the particular is constituted and sealed under an ONO record, which identifies:
* Origin: Where the particular came from and its recoverable lineage.
* Class: The material, structural, or other governing classification.
* Version: The admitted state and its relationship to earlier states.
* Binding terms: The applicable permissions, obligations, and conditions.
The Needle does not replace the Sterile Kernel's determination, EMSSEAL's sealing function, or REGISTRO's durable record. It identifies the boundary at which their respective functions establish recognized standing.
A selection that has not completed the required passage remains outside that standing.
Capability and Authority
The Federation may possess the technical ability to sample, manufacture, render, refine, measure, transport, or reproduce an object.
These capabilities do not independently authorize its admission or issuance.
A manifold describes permissible variation. A chassis carries configured structure. A representation depicts or encodes an object. None independently establishes the identity of a recognized particular.
The same distinction applies after admission: authority to perform one operation does not establish authority to perform another.
An available operation is not necessarily an authorized operation.
L’Aiguille
In French, aiguille means needle. It also denotes a sharply pointed mountain pinnacle, reflecting its association with precision and pointed form.
The related verb aiguiller means to direct or route, including the switching of a train between tracks.
These meanings suit the Needle's function: a precise point of passage at which the direction of a particular is governed by established conditions.
The language also anticipates two related operations:
A pin may locate, hold, or provisionally align something without establishing its admission.
A stitch may join separately recognized elements while preserving their respective identities and the relation formed between them.
Pinning and stitching may acquire more specific functions elsewhere in the Federation. Neither substitutes for the Needle.
Governing Rule
Selection is not admission. Admission is not ownership. Representation is not identity. Capability is not authority.
The Needle marks the passage by which a selected realization acquires recognized standing within the Federation.
Its origin, class, version, and binding terms remain recoverable. Its constitution does not erase its prior existence or enlarge the authority granted over it.
